NEC Exam

Ok, I see that the state of Illinois does not require anything to be an electrician. It is up to the individual cities. The city of Chicago has some of it's own weird rules and regulations that don't require an NEC exam. What I am trying to figure out is how (and where) to take the NEC exam so that I could be an electrician in most Cook county cities (excluding Chicago). I can't seem to find any place to actually take the exam. Also, how do you know which cities will accept the NEC? Do you call city hall every time you wish to do a job in a certain city? I heard that most cities were reciprocal. So do they all generally accept the NEC exam? I know it's a lot of questions, I'm just thoroughly confused. Out of all of my questions, maybe someone can just point me to where I can take the NEC? Every time I search on Google, it just comes up with prep books and exams.

Thanks 360youth! I tried calling the Springfield, IL office to inquire about the exam. They had no idea what I was talking about. Then they gave me a new number and it was for real estate licensing/exam information! Ah well, I'm sure I'll find it eventually.

Are you familiar with states that don't have statewide licensing? I'm really curious what you are supposed to do when you are completing work in different cities with different rules and codes. And what if they don't reciprocate your license? Does that mean you can never do work in that city? Seems rather harsh!

You can take the tests here

Remembers you need to meet all the requirements of your state. In this case you cant because "They don't do State licensing" just like PA but maybe you could get a neighboring state and use that until states like PA and Ill get up to speed.

Heres a question.. and this happened to me... How do people who work in a non license state document their time toward taking the Masters Test??? Few hold a license in PA "relatively speaking" since its not required. As a kid out of High school I worked for a contractor and learned a lot, but I could not count that time for a MD license since it was not work under a Master License. Come to MD do the same work and now it means something.

Oh well thats the system some times it works for you and sometimes it works against you.

Many of the suburbs in the Cook County area only accept the Chicago test. Each city can do it the way that they want to and you will have to check with each area that you want to work in.

I kinda had this problem with MD. I use to work maintenance and I was not under a master electrician. How ever I could sign off on my own time sense I hold a WV masters license, I just needed another 2 years before I got the 5 or 7 years you need to work under a master for MD. Kind of stupid if you ask me. Try moving across the country to a state that you need a license to work in. Very hard to do. You would think that the exam is based off of the NEC that all states would recognize a license. I honestly don't mind paying a fee but the paper work and the whole system now is a big joke. I would be embarrassed to represent a system like this.

Quite a few suburbs offer their own licence, which requires taking a test. That licence is then usually accepted in most towns in the Chicago area, but not in the City of Chicago. Even if you get one, you still need to check with each town to see if they accept that one. Chicago's is accepted in most all local towns. The only one I know of that some towns don't accept is from the City of Naperville. Most towns around the Chicago area follow Chicago code, so be prepared for that.
Good luck.

Which means that you use EMT and not NM in a dwelling unit and there is very limited use of MC or other flexible wiring methods.
