NEC in Louisiana in 1987

I am the Building Official in the town where I practice Architecture and I am reviewing a Church building built in 1987 that has recently had storm damage to the Sancutary. It has non-metalic (romex) wiring strung above the lay-in ceilings. What NEC would have been in effect in 1987 in Louisiana and would non-metalic wiring have been allowed for an assembly space for more than 100 persons?

Welcome to the forum.

The eighties for me was like the sixties for some others, large chunks of it are gone from my memory and I was not working as an electrician quite yet, but I will take a crack at your question and see if anybody else comments.

I don't have any code books from the eighties but I doubt that romex would have been allowed. It would be important to look up the classification of the building according to local building and fire codes at that time and if there was any change of use as well.

just compared my 1987 NEC to 2014, art 518 is very short, has been re organized some but reading between the lines the basic requirements have not really changed that much. Most of changes moved content from exceptions to the regular content in one way or another. 518.5 was not in the 1987, but doesn't really apply to the question in the OP.

Nothing in 518-4 (wiring methods) in 1987 indicates there was changes from 1984, I don't have a 1984 edition.

Welcome. I dont think NM was banned above drop ceilings of commercial/assembly places until much later than 1987. I tried looking up a few different queries re: 'LA NEC/bldg code 1987' and came up empty. My gut tells me if it was inspected/installed in 1987 it was allowed then.

1990 NEC only allows NM in non fire rated construction by Exc. 1 which is new in the 1990. I don't have an '87, but since the Exc. was new something was different in the '87. I wish I had one to check.
Is exc 1 new or just been changed is the question. Can't look at my 87 right now so can't tell you what it says, is possible something was reworded or moved to a different location but same basic intent overall.
