NEC murder defense...

I swear to god, I'm going to kill this HT guy and claim NEC as my defense. In the last week I've heard him give the following advice - and of course his position is much more respected than mine so my interjections have gone un-noted.

* If the Cat 5e Cable is plenum rated you can run it through all the ducts you want. It's a great way to pull runs if you don't want to pull through walls.

* You don't have to use low-voltage enclosures if you don't want to. Just drill a hole through the drywall big enough for the cable and let it free hang.

* It's perfectly fine to put a set of receptacles on a dimmer to control a set of rope-lights used for isle-ways in a home theatre.

The last one mad as hell because it was downright irresponsible.

The NEC defense might keep you out of jail, but you'd still have to undergo the trial. Probably not worth it. ;)

But just so's I knows, what is "HT"?

I'm starting to put together a list of acronyms that are commonly used in this Forum. I'm not sure how to publish it. But I'll add "HT" to the list. Thanks. ;)

acronym
(noun) : a word (as NATO, radar, or snafu ) formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term
Very good idea Charlie, also while you are at it if you please, how about putting a list together of the differant slang terms used for differant types of electrical fittings and the like, I saw this on a post "lockdog" what in the world is a "lockdog" ?

This is on a forum for HT specialists, which I frequent regularily to try remind people that the NEC does cover low-voltage installations and that Code must be observed.

But he's giving electrical advice that is simply flat out wrong - including such wonderful quips as "don't worry about a permit, all it does is fatten the government's pockets" - and it kills me.

In many cases this is not all that far off.

You are not going to have to "do dis guy in" yourself. Just wait. Someone is going to take his advice, install it wrong (and without a permit), someone will get hurt :)

Ok i must ask, other than that would look sloppy just what is the danger.I have seen many data and phone lines using nothing more than cut in data ring. And have seen a few just hanking out of a wall with a jack.

If you take your car to a mechanic, and he tells you all the wrong stuff about what a safe car you have but you know that you have 2 bald tires, bad breaks, a head light that won't work :) Also have youever seen a satalite tv guy use a box for his installation I haven't.
