How many of you have the NEC on disk. I see many large quotes and I assume most are cut and pasted.
I have a code book and handbook but never considered the CD.
Another $100 is alot for something I already have. Is it worth it to you?

Re: NEC on CD-ROM

If you do go CD, you may want to consider getting the Handbook/NEC combined on the CD. That way you can keyword search both at once. I've seen them on eBay in the $100+ range for new sealed ones.

You may be able to get used ones for less. If you go used, be sure to get a written transfer of software license-- and check with the NFPA to make sure that software licenses can be transferred for used software.

There may be other online or brick-and-mortar auctions where you can score a new or used one.

Walmart has the 2002 NEC CD for $72.60

Pete: The thing to realize about the CD is that it is not an adobe acrobat (pdf) format. I can't recall the program it uses, but the search capablities are nothing short of magnificent! :D

I have only the '99 here at the house, and I sure wish I had the 2002 at work to search for an answer quickly while someone is on the phone. I guess it depends on where you use the code. If you use it in your truck, I probably wouldn't get it, but if you use it in an office, I would.

Pete,

From the NFPA the CD is $89, deduct 10% if you are a member. The search cabality alone will allow it to pay for itself rather quickly, at least thats my opinion.

It's easy to convert the pages to PDF if you need to. Here is one FREE utility to convert any document to PDF:

It only takes a few seconds.

I use it primarily for rapid searches, and I agree that the search engine is great. But if I have to do any detailed research on a code question, I prefer the hard copy.

Re: NEC on CD-ROM

I buy the electronic version and the paper version of the NEC, ordering it the summer before the code cycle-next summer. I get a prepublication price that is a big savings over both. I normally buy the handbook in the bound version, but I don't use it much anymore, Mike Holts Understanding the NEC (two volumes) is better and has more information.

Gentlemen, Thank you very much!
This is some good feedback. I'm glad this many of you agree.
I don't do alot at home right now but I do some. Mostly the shop. This way I can install it at home and my laptop. 2005 is definite and I think I will look for it on Ebay, I never though of that(surprisingly).

NEC @ Wallmart???

I have the 99 NEC on CD-Rom.For myself it was not worth the money.I found it harder to read than my hardcopy. Also when i did a search on a word for instance it would literally give me all the references in the code book containing that word. What i have come to understand is that it is a lot easier for me anyway to find an answer to a code question the old fashioned way.I think they would have to substantially improve the cd for me to consider buying another.

Try putting a set of words in a sentance in " " It will only look up where this sentance is. or if your looking for sevral words that might be in an artical just type them in leaving a space between and it will only look up articals with them in it. Like "grounding electrode conductor" or ground bond electrode . this will narrow down the hits. also the search shows how many times a word, sentance or word together show up to the right of where it shows what you typed in.
