A project proposes street lights with receptacles for holiday decorations. Where are these addressed in code - specifically the receptacles? Are separate circuits required for the receptacles, even if the owner doesn't care about separate controls for the holiday lights? NEC applies, because the system has its own metered service and will be owned by the city, not the utility. Timeclock/photo control is at the panel.

Re: NEC Street Lights with Holiday Decorations

If they are owned by the city, all bets are off. I am assuming the city is also the AHJ. Your need to nail down how they want it done and get it in writing! You may be following the NEC, NESC, or just their rules. Find out who the AHJ is going to be and what the rules are going to be before bidding this job.

This will be a commercial installation so a lot of the rules will be different anyway. :D

Re: NEC Street Lights with Holiday Decorations

We designed the system withOUT receptacles, because cost control was a priority. After the project was awarded, the contractor asked the City, "Hey, would you guys like me to add some receptacles for Holiday decorations?" City said "yes," and now it's my job to ask for a cost estimate (i.e., provide the design modification) for the change. I'd like to ask for two estimates - one for receptacles on a separate circuit, and one for receptacles on the same circuit. Then, I want the City to decide which they want after the contractor provides the alternate prices. Thought I'd check code on the "receptacles on same circuit as street lights" part and came up dry.

Well, that's another issue . . . They're 240 off of 120/240.

Re: NEC Street Lights with Holiday Decorations

Electrical contractor proposed to pull a neutral for the 120V receptacles, and alternate (balance) the receptacle load between the red & black in each circuit. In the end, we asked for separate controls.

Good you went with separate circuits, the proposed way was a code violation.

A similar situation was done in my area years ago. Problems was as the downtown "sidewalk sales" expanded, the receptacles were used for all types of things inclding roasting ovens, coffee pots, etc. The calculated load was never intended for this application and now the city feels they were not provided a job job.
