Need a heater...

So I am rehabbing my 2nd floor, complete gut job, dormer, etc...and then it dawns on me...the bathroom has no heat source - unless you want to count the overkill on lighting :) .

The house has forced air, but any hope of running ductwork is history at this point.

I *could" install some elec. BB heaters, but I want something a bit more visually appealing. Space is tight(house is a cape), ceiling panels are probably a no-go also.
Anyone have some ideas on a recessed type of heater - I have a wall cavity or two that might be available (plumbing and pocketdoors haven't taken it all)?
Anyone have any commentary of those "heaters" that go below the tile floor (over substrate)?

Re: Need a heater...

220V TOE KICK HEATERS UNDER THE VANITY,,WALL THERM,AND AN ELECTRIC BASEBOARD UNDER THE TOWEL RACK,,"YOU'LL BE TOASTY WARM"
I HAVE FORCED HOT WATER BUT IN THE MASTER BATH I WENT THIS ROUT,NOW I DON'T HAVE TO CRANK UP THE MASTER BEDROOM ZONE,WHEN I COME HOME FROM WORK,,Works great
sorry for the caps ,i just noticed,,
just a thought,,

Re: Need a heater...

If your construction permits it, the floor heat is awesome. Not only is it a great way to heat (comfort wise), but your feet will stay toasty warm - especially like this morning - here it is very, very cold, and my bathroom floor is very, very cold.

Re: Need a heater...

Definitely go with radiant floor heat. I installed it in my bath and it is great.
Baseboard is ugly, fan forced is noisy, heat lamps are useless.

No vanity ~ pedistal sink; elec. BB heaters look "trashy", IMHO and, no offense to anyone that has them.

Do you mean elec. or hot water?

Have you got a brand for me?

Exactly my thoughts.

Thanks folks.

Re: Need a heater...

As Pierre mentioned floor heat is a good option if your construction will allow it. Don't get radiant heat confused with "warm tiles" though. Radiant heat is connected to a hot water-baseboard heating system and will warm the entire room. On the other hand "warm tiles" will do just that - warm the tiles. It is a radiant heat coil or mat that is installed onto the wire mesh before the thin-set and tiles are laid down. It is designed for supplemental heat only.

If neither of these methods are good for you, Berko makes in-wall heaters with built in thermostats that can throw off a great deal of warm air. The amount of heat is dependant on what size wire and voltage you want to run at.

Re: Need a heater...

Cheapest way out is a surface mount electric heater (1200W) in the ceiling from Broan. Should have a 20A home run to it.

At one time, wall mount gas heaters were used, but I think they are out of favor, maybe illegal now, but they put out a lot of heat.

The warm tiles sound like the neatest idea of all, but I would worry about replacement of the heating element.

Circulating hot water under the tiles sounds great, but the installation costs would be significant.

BTW, some houses in Korea were heated by flue pipes under the floor.

Thanks for clarification (yes, I needed it)...house is forced AIR, so it appears radient is also out...warm is not heat.

I will check Berko out...voltage can be to 240v, amps can be almost anything - I have Federal Pacific!

j/k, just upped my service to 200A, actual load maxes at about 68A :)

Ceiling is basically "off-limits"....and it's MY house, so "cheap" is not the consideration - keeping "the boss" happy IS the consideration...that is, if I want to continue sleeping with her
;)

Just curious - how did you up your service to 200 amps if you still have a Federal panel ?

j/k = just kidding.
My old service was 50A with an FPE main/panel...that has been replaced with a 200A service and panel.

Re: Need a heater...

This one works out pretty good

Re: Need a heater...

Not bad Mike. You must have one hell of a bathroom to have that installed in.

Re: Need a heater...

You got rid of a fine quality FPE why ?LOL.Freezing 55 here right now.Do you not have central air ?All the bath needs is a 4 inch flex line.
