Customer has a 400 amp split style service (two 200 amp disconnects) He is installing a 70 kw diesel generator, he wants a ATS, but hes also requesting a remote start /stop inside his house or mansion i should say, ive been researching for hours and to start and stop a diesel generator you need a cool down period . What is really is throwing a monkey wrench in it is he has a photovoltaic system tied in also. Not sure how to do that without this guy actually having topull some levers.The generator is a MQ-Whisperwatt

The PV will have to be connected to the grid with a line side tap or through a panel ahead of any ATS you install in order for the inverter(s) not to "see" the generator output. There are a number of ways to design this with 2 200 amp ATS or 1 400 ATS. All will probably require a lot of rework of the existing service and PV connection.
The owner should not have to "pull some levers". The remote control is easily done. All of this is controlled by the ATS(s). You will not be able to do this with resi grade ATSs such as Generac.
 
The cool down period is if the generator was under load, if he just starting and stopping to verify operation, cool down is not needed. If he is wanting to transfer the load manually with the utility still available, it gets a little more complicated. Like Texie said, residential units are not modification friendly. Onan has remote control from internet connection for some functions, I think Generac is finally stepping up their game on that too. Not familar with the MQ's. If it is two wire start, it's pretty easy to do remote start. Commercial units are easier to do because they have more options.
 
Looked it up, I have seen those before, a lot of rental companies use them. Should be a two wire start, so that will make it easy. You will need to have a transferswitch(s) with two wire start signal capabilities. You can parralell the start signals on both switches, and the remote start switch with no problem. Once the contact opens, the unit will automatically shut down. If the HO wants to be able to transfer will utility is still available will be trickier. You will need either a remote excercise w/load input option on the transferswitch, or transfer to source two input option. Very quiet unit. I used one on my bosses house before I installed the permanent generator.
