We have a new rule at work that says we can only wear one ear plug when listening to an audio devise. I work in CATI class. If I can wear two ear plugs, is there a standing rule in any authority that says only one ear is allowed to wear an audio devise?

I don't work on anything ClassII with an audio device. We don't work around rotating machinery unless it's called for and the maintenance guys can't figure it out. On a bench, besides company rule, does anything permit us from audio devices compared to ear plugs?

Here's what OSHA says about earphones & hearing protection

Here's what OSHA says about earphones & hearing protection

OSHA has this letter:http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_document?p_table=INTERPRETATIONS&p_id=19542

Which says, in part: Use of walkmen in noise environments in excess of Tables G-16 and D-1 is a violation. Use of Walkmen over required ear protection is a violation. Use of Walkmen in occupational noise less than Tables G-16 or D-1 is at managerial discretion unless its use causes a serious safety hazard to warrant issuance of a 5(a)(1). Management and employees must be made aware that Walkmen type devices do pose a hazard to hearing if they are played too loud for any significant length of time, whether on or off the job: The energy, not the esthetics, of sound poses the threat to human hearing sensitivity.
Also this one: http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_document?p_table=INTERPRETATIONS&p_id=19319

It comes down to what your noise exposure is (including music) and what is your employer's responsibility to protect you from it in the workplace.

Hope this helps.
