I teach basic residential wiring at a college. Currently I teach basic theory, basic PIE calculation, basic AC/DC two wire circuits, basic OCPD, receptacles, GFCI operation, 3w/4w operation which takes about 15% of the semester. The other 85% of the semester the students do hands on wiring. I start with architectural wiring S1 controlling one light, show them the wiring diagram and then show them the physical installation. They start with basic wiring and I keep adding more complicated circuits for them to wire.
I don't use a book because it seems to be more information in the book that they need for this class. I teach from my knowledge.

If you teach wiring class what is your way of teaching? What wiring books or curriculum do you use?

Thanks in advance.

Is this a class for students looking to become electricians or for homeowners wanting to do some electrical work around the house? How many weeks / semesters is your class?

I teach a class of first year electricians. I use the chapter topics in the book as a springboard to talk about what I think is important. I try to get them to ask questions about anything electrical even if it is not on topic. They can read the book at home.

I think that what you teach is going to be based on how many hours each class is and how many weeks the class is taught.

My course is aimed toward electrical exams and I use Mike's Electrical Exam prep but with a lot of "field" input and, in the better classes, student input/questions.
It is a 36 hour course so there is plenty of time to cover NEC + field info.

I teach several classes of varying levels. The intro class essentially covers what you cover with he same mix of students. Its a 13 week course and I have to use the book the school tells me to use which is linked below. I illustrate on the board and use, resources online mixed. I walk them through the how and the why. Just because it works doesn't mean its right. Its about 2 hrs lecture and 3 hours lab which is where they wire the circuits.

However you structure your class, please write down your lesson plans, 'lab' exercises, and everything else that makes up your course. Power That Be -LIKE- written-down things!

Do you have a defined goal? "Upon successfully completing this class, you will be able to...." in 25 words or less!

Where I teach the school subscribed to Mike Holt's Electrical Exam Prep. We follow that while addressing the NEC by Chapter.
My class was set up to help folks pass their journeyman/contractor exams. The goal is for at least 75% to pass the test. So far we have met the goal.
