I am wiring a new detached garage. The old garage was fed from a 20 amp 2-pole breaker in the house with #10 AWG. I want to install 7 outlets and 6 light fixtures. I have a lot of questions. What size panel? How many different circuits? Does the subpanel need a main? Do I need to install a ground rod at the garage? I was thinking of using a 6 space panel with 4 outlets on 1 circuit and 3 outlets on another, 1 circuit for interior lights and one circuit for exterior lights. If I am even close please let me know.

Re: need help fast

Sounds like it would be best for you to contact an electrician for assistance. While it may seem that it should be rather easy to wire a garage, and it is to the experienced professional, you are finding out how complicated it can be. It involves much more than stapling wire and making wire connections. Planning is a major part of the process. Properly calculating the supply for the load, planning for potential future expansion, and other considerations such as ground-fault protection, welder supply circuits, door openers, and other dedicated circuits, etc. all need to be worked into the project.

One last point. Being close is not going to cut it when it comes to electrical safety and fire protection!

thanks bthielen for your great answer.
Barry this site is not for DIyer's. What your asking is pretty straightforward for an electrican. Plus you may need a permit and inspection, the cost to hire an electricain may be less than the violations you could end up with on your inspection.
