I was asked the following question via email... Please provide installation costs for the following:

Install One Indoor Fixed Camera $______________

Install One Outdoor Fixed Camera $______________

Install One Outdoor Pan/Tilt/Zoom Camera $_____________

Install One Pan/Tilt/Zoom Controller $______________

Install One Digital Video Recorder $_____________

Install One Color Monitor $_____________

Price Per Hour of Labor $_____________

Please use prevailing wage per **** County in Southern New Jersey
(Its 71.40)

They are supplying everything but the wire.

I have never done prevailing wage work and this is my first job in this field, and may be my in.

How the hell does this work? I need some help from someone who has dealt with surveillance installations before. I know the guy is also gonna want a linear foot price for the cable also. I am assuming siamese cable but I am gonna call him later and talk about this quote. Any info would be great. Thanks in advance

If that's all the information you were given with this bid request, there's not anything to work with there. You'd be just as well off to break out the Ouija board.

Price all the material and add 20%.
Then add your profit and overhead to the hourly rate on a per-hour basis. Just don't tell them how many hours it's going to be.

Install One Indoor Fixed Camera $__2hrs (ish)____________

Install One Outdoor Fixed Camera $_____2hrs (ish)_________

Install One Outdoor Pan/Tilt/Zoom Camera $_______2-3hrs (ish)______

Install One Pan/Tilt/Zoom Controller $______1-2hrs (ish)________

Install One Digital Video Recorder $________???_____

Install One Color Monitor $__???___________

Price Per Hour of Labor $_____________

Everything depends on height of the installation and the method, but these are general rules of thumb. This does not include wire pull or testing your termination connections. Also check the specifications for cable type. Can you use pvc jacket or does it need to be plenum rated (big $$$ difference). I'm doing a camera job right now and have cameras on 30' poles, so I'm using a large lift. Make sure you don't have to provide power. If you have any unanswered questions EXCLUDE it. I excluded asbestos abatement and guess what, all of the walls (inside and outside) and ceillings contain asbestos, so someone else is going to have to do all drilling and anchoring. This by no means is a complete answer to your questions, but may get you going in the right direction.

Way too little amount of information for you to bid on. You need to know what equipment will be used and cable distance. This could morph into anything.
The company I work for ran into a job where we were to bid on a camera job using fiber between several buildings. The customer was paying a technical consultant to design the system and map out the infrastructure. We walked the job and found the conduit dedicated for fiber was crushed and packed full of phone cable. We ended up using a wireless mesh system instead.

On second thought, I get the feeling you were asked to bid because whatever entity asking is required by law to get competitive bids, but already has an "awardee." Essencial information is left out purposely so you'll bid high to CYA, and the project will be awarded to their preselected designee.

When I get bid requests like this, it's normally from national maintenance outfits who do the work for national retail chains. These use these lists to select subs in local markets to do particular work at a particular store.

If that's the case, every one of these outfits I ever did work for, I got burned on the bills after a short honeymoon period of a good paying history was over.
