Good morning all I was wondering if someone would have any information on the electricians civil service exam for New York city. the test is in February .i have purchased a few of Mr.Holts code books and dvd's and have found them very educational and rewarding so far . I have also picked up a Arco book for the civil service exam. some of the questions are very challenging . Has anyone taken the test before? Are the questions taken from the Arco book? I have also seen teachers in the Chief which is a civil service newspaper. One being ETI and the other Mr. Scott Cohens class.Any information toward this would be of value ,also is their any books or study guides that anyone with the experience with these tests would recommend. Thanks to all.

Good luck with your test, NYC is going by the 2004 code with a few amendments. It is kind of late to go to Scott's school. Why don't you go to the City Book Store(NYC.gov/citystore) (212-669-8246) and get the NYC Amendments to the 2002 NEC and read, read.
NYC Licensed Electrician 17 years.

I think that he meant the 2005 NEC. It was just adopted by NYC at the beginning of this year.

2004 it is. NYC uses 2002 with amendments, and renames it NEC 2004.

Actually, on the 1st of this year, the 2007 code is in effect. That would be the 2005 with amendments, even though the test I will be taking in May will be from the 2004. Go figure.

Back to the OP, it is late for Scott's class. My understanding is that the city test could be as tough as the master. Know your theory and code. They will likely ask many questions from the amendments. Also no books allowed and questions only the way NYC can ask them. Good luck.

Do they offer NEC classes in New York colleges like they do in Texas?
Yes but you don't want the NEC in NYC. You want to take a class (like Scotts) that has NYC silly rules. Right now it is my understanding that we are going by 2002 (NYC 2004) untilfuther notice.

NYC License 17 years and still going to school.

Is this who I think it is???

The NYC test in may is based on the 2002 NEC with approximately 223 amendments. As HKYPLR stated, there are some other items on the test that only NYC may ask. Scott's class is really the way to go, if I was taking the NYC test, it is the only class I would take. I would call him and ask him if he would allow you to sit in on the rest of his classes, he may allow that. Scott is a good guy who wants to help, so ask.

Question

Hello Hy & Pierre,

You mention NEC classes are offered in local colleges? How does the union feel about colleges offering electrical classes compared to an apprenticeship program?
