Need help working on an ansul system please..

Hey so I’ve worked as a railroad electrcian for 18 years. That’s 100% of my experience. Recently I’ve jumped ship, and am trying to expand my experience and hopefully one day opens a business. Long way to go as my experience is limited.

I’m currently working in a restaurant.
An ansul system was installed, with micro switches dropped and the rest left up to me.

I have 3 3-phase exhaust fans in a hood over the gas appliances and 3 outlets under the hood as well. Two 120v and one 20amp 2phase outlet.

Truth is I’ve never had to do this or anything like it before. I have an idea, but extremely uncomfortable doing it without some guidance.

Would rather try to “figure it out” myself than ask my boss. Can someone please help?

The ansul system microswitches would need to turn off power to the outlets under the hood. This is commonly accomplished by shunt-trip breakers or a contactor.
In this area the switches would also be required to turn the exhaust fans on. With three this would probably be done with a relay in conjunction with the fans starters,.
Is there no make up air fan ??

Welcome to the forum.

I can. I would have to ask you several questions.

I will message you my number to save time.

Do you know how the existing system is designed....contactors, shunt trip, etc. ??

This is where design can either help or kill you. We always use a designated ansul panel with an integral shunt trip breaker to kill the entire panel.

Exhaust required to stay on, or turn on
Make-up air to be shut off
Any alarms required to come on

The small systems I have done were all controlled by micro switches.

Hello Larry I am also in need of some help we are doing an ansul system that was existing and now I need help figuring out how to add the 220v outlets into the system , I am new to this system? Thanks
Is adding new outlets the only modification being made?

What controls any electrical outlets under the hood now?

It could be configured any number of ways right now....
Shunt trip breakers
Pro switches
Relays
Contactors/motor starters

First place to start is figuring out if it's all functioning the way it's supposed to. It may need some reconfiguration

Hey Larry. I have a question if you can help….

I’m getting a plug in 3 pole 100 amp shunt trip breaker to feed my panel designated for all the under the hood appliances

I can’t figure out what the shunt wires are. It’s two wires coming out of the 4th space of that 3 pole breaker. Are they N/O or N/C ? Does one wire give out 110 v? ….Then, when the other wire makes contact to it the breaker trips?

Do I get a 2 pole contactor that’s controlled by the ansul system microswitch to trip the breaker?

The two wires are connected to a coil inside the breaker that allows remote tripping of the breaker. They do not connect to the breaker's circuit poles in any way.

Most shunt-trip coils can't handle constant power, so they should be supplied by a source that loses power as soon as it trips. Most Ansul panels have S.T. terminals.

No, but we need to know more about the system to answer how to connect it to yours. Usually one wire lands on the neutral bus, and the other to the Ansul system.

Let me know if you would like my number.
