Hi I'm Brian I've been in the field for 7yrs now and I'm tired of working for someone. I want to take the NJ Electrical license test but don't know were to start. I have experience in res., Indus., comm., and even some explosion proof work. I would like to know if anyone provides a prep exam course in the Middlesex county NJ area. Also if there are any books on the exam that i could study . this might be a stupid question but how do i go about taking the test. like i said before i don't know were to start and my boss won't help me with anything that has to do with me getting my license. I'm new to this forum and not sure how everything work so please bare with me.

Thanks for your time and any info is greatly appreciated.
Brian

Brian,

Welcome to the forum. You should start with the State requirements. Info can be found here:

The best advice I can offer is to take a prep class that is geared towards the NJ licensing exam. Not sure of any in Middlesex. Maybe someone else will post a good instructor in you area. Good Luck.

I found Mike Holt's Electrical Exam Preparation to be a pretty good general study guide when I was preparing for my master exam. However, there were some unexpected things on the exam, so the book was only useful to a point. Best bet is to get any information you can from whomever administers the test. That way, you can focus your preparation on what you need to know.

NJ probably has an electrical contractor's association, and there's a good chance they offer an exam prep course. That's what I did here.

Otherwise, welcome to the forum! It's a good place for sharing ideas and helping each other out.

Try this link also:
http://www.nj.gov/lps/ca/nonmedical/electrical.htm

You will find info on:etc...

If your boss will not sign off on your "time served" (on-the-job), you can use your W-2's...I hope you saved them.

I had some links for prep courses....gone now...BUT...
[Bob Frangipane] does his courses in Lyndhurst (@ Rt. 17 & 3 in Bergen County)

You might also search for Ben Shedlock or TEC. These guys might be a bit further South for you.

I second the Mike Holt's Exam Prep Guide. Going through that book helped me prepare for the calculation's that were on my test and looking up all the sample questions really got me acquainted with the code book. I also used some CDs from Dan Dudley that ran on my computer in similiar format to the test I had to take. That was helpful and a few of the questions on my test were exactly as worded on the CD. I did go to a exam prep class and the things they went over and included in the study guide they gave out pointed me to the areas I needed to concentrate on. Good luck with it.

Brian,
I also took the prep course offered by Ben Shedlock, the link provided by Oakey in the previous post. I was pretty satisfied, but that was about 12 years ago. A buddy of mine took the course last year and was not too happy with it, although he did pass the test (and thats all that really matters). Mr. Shedlock is probably about 110 years old now and my friend didn't seem to think he was very sharp.
Warshauer Electric Supply in North Brunswick offers several training programs, including Exam Prep. They've always got flyers on the counter about it, or probably on their website.
Middlesex County College is offering a Licensing Prep Course starting this September. ( I'll be taking the Electrical Inspector ICS course.)
