I have a customer that wants a transfer switch for a backup generator. This should be easy but I'm drawing a blank. He has a 400amp meter base outside his garage with a 200amp main breaker on each side of it. It is also bricked up to the sides of the boxes. One is for the house the other is for the shop. The panel for the house is right behind the main breaker inside the house. The panel for the shop is on the other side of the house. Both panels are main lug panels. He wants to run both buildings off of the one generator. Any ideas would be great. Thank you in advance.

You're not gonna like it, but your options are either two 200a transfer switches, or a single 400a one.

Having the two exterior disconnects makes the installation of two switches much easier than a single.

I should have asked whether you want automatic or manual operation, and my answer may change.

If shop is a separate building it should have had a main breaker no matter what (or at least complied with six mains rule).

If you have convertible mains type panels install a main breaker and backfed generator breaker and interlock kit. Will need to install a generator feed between the two if you want to use a single generator though. A second generator for the shop is also an option
