Hello everyone:

Can we use NEMA 12 disconnect switch located outside under an overhead canopy without exterior walls? The disconnect switch will not be exposed directly to any rain water or any water that I can think of since it's protected by the overhead canopy. The contractor saying this disconnect needs to be replaced with 4X or 3R but I'm hoping that we don't have to. The canopy is 25'WX16'DX 12'H, and the disconnect switch is located on the wall at the center of 25ft length.

Thanks,

Hoffman used to state that their N12 boxes can be used as N3R by adding a drain. Which at least saves you from replacing it.

IMO, N12 is fine for your application.

NEMA12 does not have a driphood so it cannot be installed outdoor where it is possible for water to pool against the top gasket on the door.

NEMA12/3R enclosure doors have drip hoods and provisions/allowances for a 'drip hole'.

From an inspector's standpoint: Look at 110.28.. NEMA 12 is not listed for outdoor use.

Thank you all for the responses. It appears the owner wants to go with the 4X since it's technically is located outside and no matter if will be exposed to water (rain) or not even though my thinking NEMA 12 will work since it will not be exposed to any water at that location.
