I have a customer contact me about installing a Nema 14-50 outlet on the side of his house. He said he will be purchasing an electric vehicle soon. I plan to install a 50 amp two pole breaker and run NM 6-3 to this outlet.

I don't want to over think this--but after I complete the work everything is on him. Right?

I don't know what you mean by "everything is on him".

Are you going to need to supply a new load calculation when you get the permit?

Will the existing service support the new load calculation?

Adding a 40 A load to most 100 A services is going to be problematic, at least from the calculated load side of things. It will probably work just fine, and never overload anything, but from a legalistic view it might well be an issue.

Incidentally NM cannot normally be run outside, and the box will be outside.
