NEMA Enclosure

Hi Everyone,

Dose anyone know where in the 2008 NEC it talks about NEMA in Enclosures and/or boxes? More specifically talking about NEMA boxes and motors.

You will only find NEMA references in Informational notes / Fine print notes which are not part of the code itself.

Check out Section 110.20 of the 2008 NEC. The enclosure-type numbers are from NEMA. The section and table was moved from 430.91 in the 2005 NEC.

NEMA enclosure ratings are described here:

Executive summary:
NEMA1 = indoors
NEMA3R = outdoors and in a specific orientation, usually upright
NEMA4 = outdoors and in any orientation
NEMA4X= like NEMA4, but also rust proof

Did you mean 110.28? Maybe it was moved since 2008, 110.28 in 2014 does have table like you described, and sounds like what OP may be looking for.

Since the OP asked the question specifically for the 2008 cycle, Bryan answered with the correct section number and it was 110.20.

Yes, it moved again in the 2011 NEC to 110.28.
