I have an application of a chemical storage building that may require new lighting. The existing lights are 2x4 open lamp fluorescents which may have to be ugraded to vaportight. If I know the chemicals and vapors that are in the building, where do I start on determining what type fixture to use, based on division and classification of application?

By vaportight, I guess you mean, Class1, Div 2?

You are probably going to have to start in the Crouse-Hinds catalog. The major manufacturers typically shy away from classified fixtures.

Talk with the local fire marshall. He/she will be able to guide you on what should be in place. They are ones that will be inspecting you anyways.

Before you talk to the inspector, get MSDS sheets for all of the materials. He will most likely want to see them, to look at flash points, i.e. checking for flammable liquids and combustable dusts. The other question is: Is the material always stored in airtight containers or is it transferred/dispensed to other containers?
