I am going to use NEMA L14-50R and NEMA L-14-50P as an example. A commercial coffee machine came with a L14-50 plug. Because the plug is rated for 50 amps, is it necessary for the circuit breaker serving this coffee machine to be a 50 amps circuit breaker also? As per the coffee machine's electrical cut-sheet the maximum over-current protection device for this equipment is rated for 40 amps. Thank you.

You are permitted to use a 50A receptacle on a 40A circuit. See 210.21(B).
