What is the equivalent Class 1, Division 2 NEC Article for Zone 'n' ?

(See) Class 1, Zone 2, Article 505.2, Definitions, Type of Protection 'n'.

'n' = Class 1, Div. 2, ______?

A general-purpose enclosure shall be permitted to be installed in Division 2 location if there are no sparking devices

These NEC Code references refer to the Class1, Div.2 articles that define the "no sparking device" rules. Are these the Class 1, Zone 2 'n' equivalent?

1.) 500.8 Equipment, 500.8(B)(3) Where specifically permitted in Articles 501 through 503, general-purpose equipment or equipment in general-purpose enclosures shall be permitted to be installed in Division 2 locations if the equipment does not constitute a source of ignition under normal operating conditions.
2.) II Wiring, 501.10 Wiring Methods, (B) Class 1, Division 2.
3.) Article 501.10(B)(4) Boxes and Fittings.
4.) Article 501.105(B)(3) Without Make-or-Break Contacts.
5.) Article 501.105(B)(4) General Purpose Assemblies.

Bob,

A NEMA 4 or 4X enclosure containing passive/non-sparking components, in my case "terminals", is suitable for Class 1, Division 2 area, provided that the T-codes are met. Is this correct?

Yes, that's suitable for Class I, Division 2; but it still doesn't make it the equivalent of AEx n. The "short form" description of protection technique "n" in Section 505.2 is incomplete; in fact, correctly applied, it is further broken down into three additional subdivisions. See Section 505.8(D) and its further reference to Table 505.9(C)(2)(4). To get the full and complete description you need to read ANSI/UL 60079-15-2002, Electrical apparatus for explosive gas atmospheres ? Part 15: Type of protection ?n?; and ANSI/ISA 12.12.02-2003, Electrical apparatus for use in Class I, Zone 2 Hazardous (Classified) Locations: Type of protection ?n.?
