The NEMA VE-2 states that splice plates are to fall between the support and the quarter point of the span. Is this the span between supports or 1/4 the length of the tray?
 
I understand 1/4 span to mean the support is to be within 1/4 of the total tray span length and the 1/4 to be the 25% from the end of the cable tray. So if the tray is rated to span 20' the support should fall within 5' of the end of tray section. VE2-2006 section 4.3.1 allows for random splice location for some cable tray and splice designs and to refer to manufacture guidelines.
