NEMA vs. IEC Standards

Dear people,

I am working on a Project of a HDS RECYCLE COMPRESSOR. It requires the use of a 10 HP motor. The local Standard for Refinery makes reference to the use of IEC Standard.
The question is:
The IEC Standard applies for 50 Hz motors for use in European Countries. However, since this Project is for Venezuela and uses 60 Hz power my assumption is that the IEC Standard would not apply.
So, there is difference if I use a NEMA frame motor? or it is the same thing.
I don't have IEC or NEMA Standards to see differences. Please help.

Re: NEMA vs. IEC Standards

You didn't state which standard was referenced. Most likely it was IEC 60034-12, and it applies both to 50 and 60Hz motors. If it was a CENELEC standard, then indeed it only applies to EU facilities.

In either case the primary "end user" differences are motors rated in kW rather than hp, frame sizes, motor terminations and connections, and frame grounding requirements.

Per IEC there is no such thing as "ordinary location" motors permitted in any Zone. Motors and their terminal boxes must be "increased safety" (protection type Ex e) as a minimum.

US Article 505 in NOT an accurate implementation of the IEC Zone system, in my opinion. Don't try to use it if there is any indication that the facility is to be built to IEC standards.
