NEC 600.32 deals with Neon Secondary Circuit Conductors, Over 1000 Volts, Nominal. The article has always been pretty cut and dried in my mind, until recently when I spoke to a friend in San Diego. Now 600.32(A)(2) comes into question. It states, "Conduit or tubing shall contain only one conductor." In certain instances a separate ground wire must be run through the wall and back to the transformer to connect to the house ground. In my area we would be red tagged if we ran that ground wire in the same conduit as one of the secondary conductors. According to my friend, running the ground wire in the same conduit is encouraged. He believes that the conductors referred to in 600.32(A)(2) are secondary conductors. In my area, it's any conductor. I'm thinking that San Diego might be right by the mere fact that the title of the article tells us we're dealing with secondary circuit conductors. Should I have one of those friendly debates with our local inspector?
Also, in my mind, 600.32(A)(4) precludes the use of this practice, that is, with nonmetallic conduit. Any thoughts on that would also be appreciated.
