I know that new installations of large appliances require a ground, or 4 wire application. Some people use their old receptacle that is only a three wire outlet. Is it necessary to reomove the bonding jumper on the appliance to avoid getting possible "contact" because the neutral will be grounded at the appliance?

Yes, you must lift the jumper for a four wire connection.

For a three wire connection the jumper is necessary.

How do (some people)use a 3 wire receptacle on a 4 wire circuit? Do they use a 3 or 4 wire cord? Where do they terminate the egc?

A 3wire installation is only permitted if the circuit is existing and the appliance is being replaced, otherwise it would be a violation.

Yes the bonding jumper must be removed on a 4 wire installation,or a parallel path would be created.IMO

In an existing installation, the cord should be matched to the existing receptacle, and the appliance bond made or not made accordingly. The existing branch circuit cable determines the rest.

On the contrary, the neutral being bonded requires the use of the jumper; it's removed for 4-wire installations.

I tried to say the same thing but you did a better job. What a great forum.
