Neutral / Powerplant / Ground Rod

When current returns to the main panel via the neutral, does it return to the power plant via the main panel neutral line or does it leave the system via the earth ground rod?

Please explain.

Think it through, here is your hint, you getting the same voltage in your panel that the power plant generated that power at?

Go ahead, make it hard on him! I'll offer a clearer answer, though it is only a partial answer. Following the "hint" might get you the rest of the way. Here's my contribution: unless you are talking about the utility's transmission and distribution systems, the ground rod and planet Earth are almost never involved in current flow.
