We are serving a 3-phase, 4-wire load from a 3-pole disconnect switch without a solid neutral. Is it permissible for the neutral to go straight through the disconnect to the load? Or does it need to be terminated on a neutral lug in the switch?

Is this a service?

No. This is a local disconnect for the piece of equipment served from a branch circuit panel in the building. Well down stream from the service entrance.

I would look at 404.2B

Thank you. Yes I know that the neutral should not be disconnected. My question is whether or not it is required to be terminated on an insulated neutral lug in the disconnect or can it go straight through the disconnect to the load?

Handy for troubleshooting, but I see no requirement in the NEC that it appear on a terminal.

It can pass straight through, there is no reason and no code rule to land it if you do not want to.

I would pass through assuming it was easy.

Would doing that make the disconnect enclosure a pull box and subject to the associated sizing and conduit spacing requirements which might not be met?

You have too much time on your hands. :)

I would say it remains an enclosure but it is being used as a raceway and is subject to the rules of 312.8 as directed by 404.3(B).

Your question is an interesting one but if an inspector asked me that I would say 'Hell no' with an air of confidence so thick he may say the heck with it. :p If that does not work I may have a problem.

Thanks for the replies. I couldn't find anything requiring the neutral to be terminated in the disconnect, but know there are a lot of obsure rules that I'm not familiar with.
