can a (one) neutral conductor be put under two screws? I know you cant put two under one screw per 408.41.

I see that done by some of the old timers at duplex receptacles where they only had one cable. They'd strip it maybe 1-1/2" long, and wrap it in a great big 'U' around both screws. There's a barrier between the screws on modern receptacles that prevents you from doing this, so I wonder if this was a product change specifically aimed at stopping this practice?

I assume the barrier is there for the times you split wire the receptacle.

A few loose strands could get messy with 240 across them.

this is done in the panel on the neutral bar.
Oh, yes. That's a violation. The neutral bar clearly has information stating what gauge of wire each size hole is for. You can't split a 1/0 to go into two holes, since the holes are not rated for 1/0 in this example. You'd need to use somthing along the lines of a QO100AN neutral lug adaptor.

I believe what you are referring to is when they run in an SE cable to the panel and the aluminum neutral is seperated into to pieces and terminated under two screws..is that a correct statement..

Yes and that is why you need a neutral adapter to terminate under the screws.

It is important for inspectors and electricians to know that the lug pictured is rated at 70 amps. For more than 70, the lug no longer has "fingers" and will bolt directly on top of the neutral or ground bar.
