A new home I wired has 3 HVAC disconnects on a wall. The HVAC installers placed 2 of the 3 condensors in front of the disconnects. maybe 16 inches of clearance from the wall to the machine. One of their guys said that as long as you can reach the disconnect and turn the power off, it is ok becase of the 110.26 exception.

Isn't it great HVAC guys can now rewrite the NEC?

Also, they put the wrong condensor infront of the wrong disconnects. Had they bothered to open them up and check the wires, the spacing would have worked out and there would be no violation. On the bright side, the company agreed that if the inspection fails, they will pay for the corrections. (They are not real diligent here about enforcing 110.26)

What exception are they citing? There are no exceptions to 110.26(A).

I think that was c2500's point: that the HVAC guys are taking credit for a non-existant exception.

I just recently had an inspection on single wide trailers that came pre-wired for a A/C unit disconnect on the outside, even had a outlet with in 25 ft of the disconnect. But, While doing the inspection for the service, I spotted two young A/C men installing flex and conductors from the disconnect to the A/C unts. When I asked them if they were licensed or had drawn a permit to do this? They looked and said,"my boss said to do it." So, we had to explain the rules as they are written here in Colorado. No harm no foul, just get a L.E.C. to draw the permit and do the work, call for an inspection and we will be ok with it, as it was in a Park, not on someones property. Just a tidbit of info. Where's my glasses?
