We have discussed the "mini-split" HVAC systems previously, but today I encountered a "split-min-system) and the interconnection cable had been provided by the manufacturer with instructions that only that factory cable should be used/
It is Honeywell Genesis Series Cable consisting of #14 THHN conductors with a sunlight resistant, RoHS compliant PVC jacket and is 600v direct burial and TC rated.
The product data sheet states the UL listing is "Tray Cable-UL1277"
My opinion is that, based on NEC 336.12, if installed in a non-industrial environment the cable must be in a raceway.
Comments ?
(note the indside unit is one with a 240v motor)

I would say yes, except if the indoor portion of the mini-split was somehow listed so as to be covered by 725.41(2)(B), Class 1 Remote-Control and Signaling Circuits in accordance with 336.10(5).

I personally have never run into that scenario, but tomorrow is another day.......
