I getting ready to do my own top out electrical. Julie at HD told me I had an option of using GFCI/AFCI breakers instead of GFCI outlets. Besides the cost is there any downside to this approach?

Each have their uses. With all the areas that need both AFCI & GFCI, the dual function breakers are a cost saver. Even if something only needs AFCI, the DF breakers are only a couple of dollars more.
If the area just needs GFCI, then GFCI receptacles are cheaper.

I live in an old house that has no GFCI outlets so I'm not familiar with them. I like the idea of using regular outlets and doing the circuit protection at the panel. Since the garage is only required to have GFCI, not AFCI would you still use a DF breaker?

I thought we were not supposed to help DIY posts?
Since I want to speed up the process, I'm still going to use an electrician to help me, I just want to make sure I know all the details. I'll wire a few boxes just to get a feel for it. I don't want some bozo letting the wire nut do all the twisting. If it was your house, wouldn't you do the same?
