I have an off-grid cabin in Northern Wisconsin that is currently powered by solar and generator. There is no power at the road, and due to the high bedrock, the cost to bring in power has been astronomical. Instead of paying the high utility fee, it has been suggested that I install a private lateral instead. The utility will not provide me with any voltage other than 120/240v 1ph. The plan is to set the meter adjacent to an existing transformer and then extend the private service 1,600 feet to the residence, and the utility has blessed the design concept. Due to the long service run, a 600v step-up and step-down transformer will be utilized. In anticipation of pulling the electrical permit, I wanted to create a one-line diagram so I could force myself to size the conductors and conduits. The one-line is still a works in progress, but I sure could use some help verifying a few items:
  • There will be a fused disconnect at the start of the system. I'm torn if this disconnect should have a bonded neutral.
  • The transformers are 2 wire, 1ph, 600v. I suspect a neutral is not needed between the two transformers?
  • If the meter, fused disconnect, and step-up transformer were grounded and the disconnect, step-down transformer, and house panel were grounded; is a ground wire needed between the two installations? I need to set a ground at the meter because this project will be completed in stages.
  • Is the 60a 600v disconnect required before the step-down transformer? I thought the disconnect could be eliminated if the remote location of the fused disconnect was identified. Does the 60a disconnect need fuses?
  • Wisconsin allows 8' before the panel. Is this measured in plan or by wire run? If in plan, the existing house panel will be close enough to the service entry. If it's by wire length, the panel would be too far away. This would be a moot point if the non-fused disconnect stays in the design?
  • The existing house panel has a bonded neutral. Does the presence of the fused disconnect make the panel a subpanel, so the screw should be removed?
If there are any other items of criticism that you'd like to share, I'd be open to the feedback.

Ok, so how do I attached a pdf of the one-line?
