I was browsing through a phone book from another city and I saw an ECs add nit stated that they did Residential,Commercial,Industrial and Institutional. The first three are pretty common to see but I was not really sure what would classify as an instutional install? Would that be prisons and jails??

Yes, also assisted living facilities, social rehabilitation facilities, hospitals, nursing homes, mental hospitals, detoxification facilities, dialysis centers, and adult and child care facilities.

while they are all institutional they are in different groups, the first two are I-1, the next 4 are I-2, the next one is an I-2.1, jails, correctional centers and juvenile halls are I-3 and the last two are I-4.

A school is actually an E occupancy (educational)

This topic is a good example of why electrical professionals should have at least some training and education in the building codes.

I couldn't agree more. I just put on a training for our inspectors about things that are not even mentioned in the NEC, only in the IBC, but will still be the electricians responsibility.
