I am a Licensed Electrical Contractor and I was called to a customer that had New LED Highbay fixtures installed Recently and is Now having Problems with them. The contractor that install them was unresponsive. To install the existing fixtures were wired with the Lithonia ReLoc 277/480v System. When they installed the New lights they cut the ReLoc cord short and Butt spliced and Tapped the New Fixtures cord to it. I have a Picture but can not get it to upload.

Can you Name the code and UL Violations?

Pic would be nice.
I had seen that done before.
It's a fixture whip.
I would say a possible issue would be a butt splice exposed.
Did the new fixture have a cord that it( reloc whip) was spliced into.
Edit.
What I mean by seen before was they took that whip and set a box then tied into a fixture. In the ones I seen they used that whip as branch circuit wireing to feed more than one fixture. Bad idea.

The But splices were Taped in the same Wrap I don't know if they were rated for 277v have not opened them yet. The new fixture had a New whip cord which I assume was supplied by Manufacture. The Reloc cord was cut and then Butt spliced Hot Nuetral and Ground then all three were wrapped together in one bundle.

Yes that covers the system I was looking at the splicing. I would think that would be a code violation and Void UL Listing also

Looking at the pic I would say it works. I would also say not to code.
Now if terminated in a box with correct fitting and box support then your good.
There's a part # on that tap fitting.
This will tell you what your working with. Either a power tap or a fixture tap. Basically branch circuit or fixture tap.

I would get me a bang on with 1/4" stud,1/4 20 nut,two cord connectors, four square and blank.

This should bring you in compliance with 604.7

Yes That is what I was thinking for the repair They did this on 125 Fixtures, I was looking at Art 300 NEC Wiring methods

I do not believe you can splice the cord as shown. It would be an exposed splice. That Splice must take place in an approved enclosure. 300.15. not permitted in A-L

I would get others opinions on this as well. This is how I see it.
I would also reach out to your AHJ and ask.
Few other articles to review
110.3 (B)
410.24
410.33

I would also like to add. The splice may not be the issue with them.
If the splice is not failing the issue may be elsewhere.
Trouble shot as of the splice is good.
Can you explain the issues?

They used small Red Butt splices and they a melting the Tape we found one that was actually Darkened from the heat after the installation was completed 6 weeks ago. I am research if the Butt splices are even rated for 277/480v I doubt it
