New lights on existing brick-block wall

Customer has many store fronts being 're done, they will be getting sconces. When are j boxes required for the make up of the light. I think florescent strip fixtures didn't because the make up was in the light. Some that I took down had mc through a hole and the light strapped to the brick .

You are correct that there are many fixtures manufactured with 1/2" ko where you can direct wire the unit. Some wall warts are done that way as well as fluorescent. If there isn't a ko I would suspect it cannot be direct wired but I would read the manufactures instructions
