New Service to feed two locations

I am working on a restoration project that has a house that will be residential, and a barn that may become residential many years from now. We would like to run a new underground 200amp service to the house (120') and then also to the barn (120'), with the meter pan on another structure. Currently the meter pan feeds the two locations via overhead wiring with an old style disconnect with fuses.
The simple solution could be two seperate meters with two seperate 200 amp disconnects. But, I would rather not pay the monthly fee to the utility, especially for a building that will have minimal use for many years.
What is a more reasonable solution?

Thanks

Nelson

You can run the service to one building and feed the other one from there or you can set a pole part way and install a service then feed both structures. You have to look at the money on which way is best. Personally I never liked the service out away from the buildings but it is perfectly legit.

Depending on your local POCO rules, you might be allowed to set one 400 amp meter can and feed from it to the two structures with disconnects at the structures

I would set a 400amp meter/combo. 1-200amp to house 1-200amp to barn the combo will have a 8 space 100amp rated panel in it also for any other outdoor needs you may have.

New service

Thank you all for your suggestions; I will propose options to the electrical inspector

You need to factor in the cost to change it later if the barn is converted. Also the POCO might not allow 2 services. POCO looks at the cost and return of dollars they spend. If barn only needs min. electric now you might just want to run a 12-2 UF to it till there is a need for 200 amps. Would offer customer a choice of 3 ways to go and let them figure out what is cheaper in the end. POCO charge around here is about $8 month so at $100 a year for perhaps 5 years might end up cheaper than doing job twice.
