I have been doing electrical work under an electrical contractor for about the last 4 years. I want to get my electrical contractor certification as well now. I have a 2 yr degree from a community college but it is not related to this field. Is it really necessary to go to tech school before attempting to get my license? Furthermore, I want to start "officially" studying for the test but have no clue where to start. I dont have any of the books or anything. Anyone who can steer me in the right direction please do so. Thanks guys[/b]

One idea is to take a Code class (NEC) at the local community college.
They may also have contractor exam prep courses.

Good luck!

What you have to do for licensure really depends on what the laws are where you live. You might have to have some formal training to qualify for the license exam, but maybe not. Around these parts, no formal electrical schooling is required, but several years of documented experience is.

As for preparing for the exam itself, the licensing authorities will usually give you some indication as to what to study. I used the Mike Holt exam prep book for several months, and it helped. Depending on what you've learned on the job, you might be well prepared for the exam, or you might have a lot of serious gaps in knowledge. Electrical exams usually cover all aspects of the NEC (commercial, residential, industrial), and there are usually theoretical questions, too (e.g., "A non-blown fuse is hot to the touch. Which of the following is the most likely cause of this?"). That last question was on my master electrician exam.

go to www.coyoteits.com for an exam prep course. It's oferred in carrollton and a whole lot cheaper than other courses. other courses i've heard about cost a lot of $ and didn't excactly point them in the right direction. I'll be taking this course in june.
