What are the certification and licensing requirements for the State of New York (not looking for NY City). I am taking a correspondence course and looking ahead to what to expect as I make the career move to be an electrician. I am currently working as a tool grinder for a furniture manufacturer and its getting to be the 'same old grind'. I had some previous electrical schooling in college (23 yrs ago)which dealt with mostly agricultural applications - farm wiring and motors. I have used that knowledge to some extent but now I am really getting to learn the NEC more in the course I am taking and it is exciting. I am kind of anxious though about making the career change. Any advice? :D

Re: Newy York State requirements

New York is a "home rule" state meaning there is no state wide requirement. It is entirely dependent on the area in which you live.

In some areas there is no licensing or inspections whatsoever, and on the other end of the spectrum is the NYC requirements.

Where exactly in NY do you live?

Re: Newy York State requirements

You should contact the county officials and find out exactly what they require.

I have been to western New York (Houghton to be exact) and some of the electrical work that I saw there was quite scary. I suspect that inspections in the rural and agricultural areas is non-existent.

Electrical Inspections are required but if some home owners do their own work and do not follow these requirements they are putting themselves at risk. There are a lot of older homes and old work that needs replacment or a skilled hand to work with what is there. Hopefully at 43yrs old I have the wherewithall to learn and keep up with the demands for the electrical profession.
