If I am using a Power Ethernet System (PoE) with a centralized UPS, will NFPA 101 allow me to designate certain fixtures to be powered by the UPS (software or hardware (DIP switch) setting)? This is different from traditional methods where an emergency circuit is connecting all emergency fixtures. Here all fixtures are home run connected to a PoE switch port with Ethernet cables (digital system).

Basic question: Can I designate fixtures for emergency power with software or hardware (DIP switches) rather than an installed UL924 battery pack or a dedicated emergency circuit?

In my opinion, a regular UPS listed to UL 1778 is not acceptable as a source for Article 700 or 701 loads.

I specify UL 924 (Standard for Emergency Lighting and Power Equipment) equipment for that type of load. They are often called lighting inverters.
