Nfpa 110 - 7.2.2

I have a question regarding NFPA 110-7.2.1 and 7.2.2. I have a life safety generator that is feeding a distribution panel for the life safety equipment in a multistory office building. I have (2) ATS'; one feeding a distribution panel that feeding emergency lighting panels on every floor, and the other ATS feeds a distribution board feeding the elevators.

Where does the EPSS definition stop? At the secondary side of the ATS, the distribution panel fed from the ATS?

The way I am reading this, if there is a branch panelboard feeding emergency lighting, it cannot go in a regular electric room with a board over 1000A.

Can anyone clarify?

Thanks!

I am not sure I can answer the question. But let me ask for a clarification. The phrase "life safety" only appears in article 517, and only applies to health care facilities. I infer your building is not in that category, and that you are refering to "emergency" systems that are addressed in article 700. Is that correct?

I think you will find that it's the "EPS" that has to be installed in a separate room.

Read the code section you quoted again, and refer to the definitions in Chapter 3. You can also refer to Appendix A for more detail on those definitions, and see Appendix B for some one-line diagrams that show what's included in the EPS and the EPSS.

It seems like there was another paragraph that requires some separation between your ATS and a normal service over 1000Amps. But I can't find it offhand. Twice the working distance or something like that comes to mind, although I think the requirement has had a few revisions over the last few code cycles.
