Can someone explain why NFPA 110, "Standard for Emergency and Standby Power Systems" only refers to EPSSs in the text? Are Emergency and Standby systems both considered EPSSs?

Also, are Optional Standby Systems, as described in NEC Article 702, required to conform to NFPA 110?

In general, I would stay optional systems don't have to meet NFPA 110. NFPA 110 is more for NEC Article 700, 701, and 517 applications.

The NEC doesn't require compliance with 110, but your state building code probably adopts 110 by reference. Worth a look.

I agree for emergency and required systems. But I don't think either the NEC or the building code would care how reliable an optional system is.

On the other hand, the owner may care. And meeting the 110 requirements helps ensure a certain amount of realibility.
