Hello,
I recently noticed that the 2013 version of NFPA 72 changed the table for ceiling mounted visible appliances (strobes). It not longer shows spacing for strobes over 80 cd for ceiling heights above 20'. Brighter devices are readily available and I'm try to determine if this lack of information means I can't use say a 110 cd strobe with a 20' ceiling. I've done a lot of searching and can't find anything, so thought I'd ask the experienced folks here. Thanks for any hints.

If you look at the tables for 2010 and 2013 you'll note that the area of coverage for the 110+ candela devices is identical at all three ceiling heights in 2010. The 110+ devices are shown at the 30 foot height in 2013. There is also a note saying you can mount the devices at a lower height, so you still have the coverage, it's just a little convoluted to find. I took a look through the ROP for 2013 but couldn't find the proposal that made this change.

Oh you're totally right. So they basically just wanted to save space, no functional change :) I was so confused why the table had changed but I couldn't find any explanation of it anywhere. Thanks!

Some numpty just couldn't leave well enough alone.:happysad: The note is very vague as to the coverage at reduced height, and only those who note the change from 2010 to 2013 will totally understand it so someone coming into the trade on the 2019 cycle will have no clue. Then they'll probably put the table back the way it was.
