NFPA 79 - 13.5.9.2 reads: Electrical Connections at motor terminal boxes shall be made with an identified method of connection. Twist-on wire connectors shall not be used for this purpose.

My question: What is an "identified method of connection"?

We are currently using Panduit ring terminals, rubber tape and then vinyl tape to make our motor connections.

I think they are just banning wire nuts with this.

Identified (as applied to equipment). Recognizable
as suitable for the specific purpose, function, use, environment,
application, and so forth, where described in a particular
code or standard requirement.

It never does say who would be the identifier. Given that nut/bolt/tape is so common, I think one could safely consider that method as "identified".

I have never liked wire nuts in high vibration environments anyway. people will tell you they work fine there but having seen a few that came loose, I am not convinced. Never saw a bolted and taped connection come loose.
