Joe
I am not an inspector, and I have never been an inspector. I have been in contact with the NFPA about taking these tests. The comment I made to them is these certifications can be used as part of a resume to try and get a job as an inspector. They agreed and did say that it is part of their goal to be able to help this field.
They are considering letting me take the exams and will notify me next week.
I also spoke with the inspection agency in my area, because one of the 4 steps to receiving a certificate is making inspections after taking the test. The inspection agency here is also considering letting me 'assist' in the 20 required inspections to be able to receive the certification.
I have taken quite a few exams in the last couple of years, I like to see how I do. The guys in my area think I am nuts. I do like the challenge.
BTW- the NFPA called me yesterday and told me the books that one is allowed to take to the exam with them are, NEC - 2002, UL White Book, and the Electrical Inspection Manual/ with checklists.
She did say the test will have no questions from the UL White Book, but it is a good reference source.

What would be good study materials to prepare for the initial electrical inspector's test? I have seen numerous material for the master electrician exam but nothing geared towards the inspector's exam. I would imagine that the inspector's exam is harder and quite different than the contractor's exam.

Hforney: Good question. When I passed my electrical inspection exam I used nothing but the good ole' NEC! There is a site called www.internationalcodes.com that sells study guide disks. They are simply a barrage of questions out of the NEC, but I found them to be geared very similiar to the test. If you decide to get one of these disks, I would reccomend the 3.5" floppy and not the CD ROM, even though they are the same price. I am sure that any of Mike Holt's texts would help as well. If you are planning to take it, (this goes for anyone) please let us know how you did so we can share in your celebration! :)
