NFPA "immediate vicinity"

Wanting to figure out what constitutes "immediate vicinity" regarding smoke/co2 detectors for a single family dwelling.

Back in 2007 NFPA 72 they gave a number, 20 feet, now it's just required to be in the "immediate vicinity". Seems very subjective.
 
You want to give some context. The only three places "immediate vicinity" occurs in the code doesn't seem to match up with your description, and the only wording on placement appears in non-normative text.

While looking for the code reference, I finally found the answer to my question.

NFPA 72 - 29.7.1.1 and 29.8.1.1 specify 21' outside of each sleeping area "measured along a path of travel".
