does anyone know how long it takes to get a business permit in nj? i sent my stuff in a few weeks ago. acording to them i am allowed to conduct business 3 days after filing but how am i supposed to seal permits until i get my seal? i could probably put a copy of my business permit in the permit but i don't even have that yet. i shelled out a lot of money so far and i need to start working can anyone help???

Do you already have a Lic. and your now making an application for a business permit?
If that is the case, it can be anywhere from one to three months.

"i shelled out a lot of money so far and i need to start working can anyone help???"

If you think that was a lot you shelled out, for the permit, wait until you start operating your business, you haven't seen anything yet.

Mine took a while. The state sent me a letter saying in 90 days I would recieve my seal but until then "use this letter in place of a seal". Took them 2 years to send me my actual license.

i have my lic

i have my lic

I already have my lic, insurance, bond, van.I have everything but something from the state.I was promised to be made my old bosses partner. When I passed the test he gave me a one dollar raise,so I started to start my own business. When he found out he fired me,now I am in a mad scamble to get things going. Acording to the state(and this was even a question on the test) you have to file 3 days before you can conduct work, not 3 months. How can they expect you to sit around and not do anything waiting for them to sign a peice of paper? My wife is pregnant and I have mouths to feed. Unemployment won't let me collect cause I own a business.:-?
I was told that they would send me a letter stating that my permit was on file? is this not true and am i totolay screwed or what?!?

Famous last words.
I worked for a guy who told me "Ya know, I have no son to pass this business on to...". 15 years later, he's still in business ~ but so am I, just not for him.

You wouldn't be able to collect any time soon because you were also fired.

They will.
When did you submit the paperwork?

The State will send you a document to use "in lieu of a seal". The towns where you will be working will accept this document as "proof" of a seal ~ which assumes you have:
- License Number
- Business name
- Business permit
- Insurance
- Bonding.

Anyone that has a seal, has these items in their possession and paid for. This is why the document is an "in lieu of"...you are simply missing the seal.

You filed for a business name, done the search of taken/available names, paid the fee, etc, right?

Typically the board will send you a letter to use in lieu of the seal while the seal is being made. Just show the letter to the building department when filing out a permit. If you still do not have the letter I would call the Board of Electrical Contractors and ask them to please send you one so that you may start doing business. Good Luck.

When you do get the "in lieu of" ....make copies!
Some towns may want to keep the document "on hand".

Robwire, don't get yourself worked up into a lather. You came across as being in a panic to start making money. Many of us started out in business just as you are doing. Unless you have a backlog of jobs waiting for you to perform, having a business permit in hand isn't the most important thing. As others have mentioned, the state will issue a letter that may be used "in lieu of" a pressure seal and business permit. So, if you land a job that requires a permit you can use that letter.

In the interim, start looking for ways to make money. Contact other electrical contractors in your area and ask if they can use you on a per diem basis. As long as you have workers' comp insurance you can sub-contract work for them. There are always independent electrical contractors around who can use you for a day here and there. You just have to find them. Once you start landing jobs of your own you can hire others or sawp time back and forth with the contractors you've established a relationship with.

The board meets just once a month, so you need to get your paperwork in before the meeting. If you just miss it you'll have to wait another month until they meet again. After the meeting it should only take a week or two to get the notification that you've been approved. Then it's another 60 to 90 days to get your seal, but in the meantime you can use the temporary letter they sent with the approval notice.
