As I'm sure you all know your current license and business permit will expire on 03-15-15. You should have already received your renewal notice from the DCA. Unless you plan to drive to Newark and go directly to the Licensing Board with all your information, you can only renew on-line and with a credit card. Here are a few things you should know :

For those of you who do have computers (obviously you wouldn't be able to read this otherwise) and are renewing your licenses and business permits on line please be aware that the portion of the DCA site that handles that feature crashed yesterday. However, they are up and running today.

A couple of things you should know :
1) The vast majority of electrical contractors will procrastinate and wait until the last minute to file for their license and business permit renewals. That's probably part of the problem for the crash.

2) Your best bet is to do this late in the evening or very early in the AM when fewer users are trying to do the same thing. It's a known fact that the internet runs slower during the day when so many people across the US are trying to gain access (unless you have a T-1 line)

3) You CANNOT - CANNOT - CANNOT use Internet Explorer coupled with Google Chrome to file your update. This, I'm sure, is another reason the site crashed yesterday

4) If Internet Explorer/Google Chrome is all you have start up Explorer and then at the top where you enter a web address type in www.mozilla.com . When you are prompted to do so download the Mozilla Firefox web browser and use that. This is far better than Explorer anyway and not subject to so many viruses.

5) Should you happen to succeed in getting to the payment page via the site be aware that you can only pay with a credit card.

6) In the "business permit" portion of the renewal you will be asked for your liability info and your surity bond info. Make sure you have all that available before you start. If your surity bond is like mine it will expire on 3/15/15 or thereabout. You will need the surity bond company name, number as well as the expiration date. The DCA knows that these bonds expire but will be renewed at the maturity date. Don't worry, you'll get a bill in the mail from the insurance company.

7) If you don't have a copy of your surity bond contact your insurance agent and get one sent to you. Don't sign it yet. It has to be notarized, so take it to your local library or anywhere there is a notary and sign it in front of them and have them seal it with their signature and notary number. Keep it in your possession until the DCA asks for it

Here is some more information you may want to know about :

If you are one of those contractors who have experienced a SNAFU at the DCA regarding the inactivity of your business permit you will have to do one of the following things (you'll know there is a problem if your business permit renewal option does not show up in your computer's window when you start the renewal process on-line) :

1) Contact your bank and get a copy of the check you sent in (way back when) to the DCA-Board of Electrical Examiners (you may have to place a phone call to the Board to determine when they believe your business permit lapsed); you will need copies of both sides of the check to show that the check was deposited into the Board's account. Mail those copies to the Board along with a letter on your company's letterhead explaining what has occurred. When they verify that they made the mistake they will correct it on their website. Once that occurs you will then have to go onto their website at www.njconsumeraffairs.gov/renew and renew your 2015-2018 business permit.

2) If you cannot prove that a check was deposited you will have to fill out this form and mail it to the Board along with a check for $100.00 ($75.00 renewal fee and $25.00 late fee).

The Board office address is as follows :

Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors
124 Halsey Street, 6th Floor, PO Box 45006
Newark, NJ 07101

Thank you for the info goldstar

Dragging my feet here. As not to wait till the last moment as usual I took care of the 10 and two 8's in November. Last week I went to schedule for the final 8 and classes where full so was able to find something for March 14th. Argh. :- /

Reading your post as my heart pounded when I saw exp. on the 15th ??

I checked the license and permit I carry in my wallet and they say exp. 3/31/15

Not that 15 days makes a real big difference. But seeing that extra two weeks lower my blood pressure.

Thanks again for the post.

You are correct. It does expire on the 31st. I stand corrected. However, if you go beyond that date there will be a late fee in addition to the regular fees. The reason I posted the second part about the business permit was because a fellow contractor friend of mine believed he sent in payment for both his license and business permit at the end of the last cycle. It turns out that the State only has a record of his license payment and not the business permit payment. The whole point being that the State is not going to call you and ask why you haven't paid for both renewals. It's your responsibility to make sure you get receipts for both when you make the transactions.

Good luck with your CEU's. BTW, If you're in the northern part of NJ there are several contractors associations you could join to get your CEU's on a regular basis. That way you won't have a gun to your head in 2018.

I'll be getting my last CEU's next Saturday and then start the renewal process. The CEU thing really annoys me because electrical license holders have to take 34 hours worth of class time and electrical inspectors only need to take 15 hours. I've been told that even doctors need less CEU's than electricians.

I'm not trying to sway you in one direction or another but if you joined an electrical contractors association you probably would have enough CEU's just by going to meetings over the course of 3 years. While some of the CEU topics are of no interest to me I usually come away with some important knowledge that I didn't have before the CEU. As it turns out I have 54 CEU credits for this code cycle (not bragging - I'm just heavily involved in my association). I don't see the 34 hour CEU requirement being reduced anytime soon but the 10 hour NEC CEU may drop down to 8 hours. There is a group trying to get this reduced.

BTW, don't forget, you can carry over 8 CEU's from the last code cycle if you had more than enough in that cycle. Good luck.

Fortunately my NJ HHS Inspector's license CEU's can be used for 15 hours worth of credits. The hours are bad enough but the cost of $1000+ is ridiculous when compared to other licensed professionals in NJ.

One group I teach for has only been charging $650 for 34 hours given in four cities in NJ, Secaucus, East Brunswick, Cherry Hill and Atlantic City. They also had discounts down to $585 for early payment. But I also teach for a contractors association and you get a meal plus all your credits except for the 10 hour update.

Well it's that time again. Had a challenge registering online. Renewed my Business permit first...... now I can't renew my license. It doesn't even show up now when searched for using the search info on the renewal paperwork. There is no mention anywhere on the paperwork to renew your license before your business permit, only when you go to renew your license does it say anything. Don't know if anyone has a solution to this, but I'm on hold with Newark right now.....
