As I'm sure you all know your current license and business permit will expire on 03-15-15. You should have already received your renewal notice from the DCA. Unless you plan to drive to Newark and go directly to the Licensing Board with all your information, you can only renew on-line and with a credit card. Here are a few things you should know :
For those of you who do have computers (obviously you wouldn't be able to read this otherwise) and are renewing your licenses and business permits on line please be aware that the portion of the DCA site that handles that feature crashed yesterday. However, they are up and running today.
A couple of things you should know :
1) The vast majority of electrical contractors will procrastinate and wait until the last minute to file for their license and business permit renewals. That's probably part of the problem for the crash.
2) Your best bet is to do this late in the evening or very early in the AM when fewer users are trying to do the same thing. It's a known fact that the internet runs slower during the day when so many people across the US are trying to gain access (unless you have a T-1 line)
3) You CANNOT - CANNOT - CANNOT use Internet Explorer coupled with Google Chrome to file your update. This, I'm sure, is another reason the site crashed yesterday
4) If Internet Explorer/Google Chrome is all you have start up Explorer and then at the top where you enter a web address type in www.mozilla.com . When you are prompted to do so download the Mozilla Firefox web browser and use that. This is far better than Explorer anyway and not subject to so many viruses.
5) Should you happen to succeed in getting to the payment page via the site be aware that you can only pay with a credit card.
6) In the "business permit" portion of the renewal you will be asked for your liability info and your surity bond info. Make sure you have all that available before you start. If your surity bond is like mine it will expire on 3/15/15 or thereabout. You will need the surity bond company name, number as well as the expiration date. The DCA knows that these bonds expire but will be renewed at the maturity date. Don't worry, you'll get a bill in the mail from the insurance company.
7) If you don't have a copy of your surity bond contact your insurance agent and get one sent to you. Don't sign it yet. It has to be notarized, so take it to your local library or anywhere there is a notary and sign it in front of them and have them seal it with their signature and notary number. Keep it in your possession until the DCA asks for it
Here is some more information you may want to know about :
If you are one of those contractors who have experienced a SNAFU at the DCA regarding the inactivity of your business permit you will have to do one of the following things (you'll know there is a problem if your business permit renewal option does not show up in your computer's window when you start the renewal process on-line) :
1) Contact your bank and get a copy of the check you sent in (way back when) to the DCA-Board of Electrical Examiners (you may have to place a phone call to the Board to determine when they believe your business permit lapsed); you will need copies of both sides of the check to show that the check was deposited into the Board's account. Mail those copies to the Board along with a letter on your company's letterhead explaining what has occurred. When they verify that they made the mistake they will correct it on their website. Once that occurs you will then have to go onto their website at www.njconsumeraffairs.gov/renew and renew your 2015-2018 business permit.
2) If you cannot prove that a check was deposited you will have to fill out this form and mail it to the Board along with a check for $100.00 ($75.00 renewal fee and $25.00 late fee).
