What is required at this time to do HVAC in NJ besides the EPA cert.? As an electrical contractor can I do HVAC work if I have the Epa cert.? or do I need another business permit.

Good question, there was talk about an HVAC installer's license a few years ago but as far as I know it went nowhere.

Well they are getting their act together soon, a board has been formed. I'm just very confused, as an EC can I do this work or do I need the home improvement contractor permit too?

The only real way to answer the question is to call Trenton. For what it's worth I know someone who is an HVAC contractor and they only hold an electrical license as well as some certification to use and recover Freon.

The way I understand this (and I could be wrong) is that if you are a plumber or an electrician, that license along with a business permit and proof of insurance allows you to do that work only and you do not need to file or register for any other type of license or permit. Once your scope of work goes beyond that (i.e. roofing, siding, general construction, A/C install, etc) you need to register as a home improvement contractor and pay the State their $100 vig. AND, you must display that number on the side of your truck or work vehicle.
