Has anybody taken the NJ exam recently? I am taking it next monday and was just wondering if anyone has any advice.
Is it just like any other Experior/PSI/Thomson Prometric exam...?
Is it true that i cant use my own NEC code book?
What about the other books? Can I use my own?
Thanks in advance.

yes you can use your own book from what I have been told and you can highlight and underline, just dont write formulas into your books. I have been thinking about taking the nyc exam, have you taken it?

I was not allowed to use my own book. Although they didnt have enough to give to us ...so we had to wait until someone else done with theres first. We took business first to accomodate.

I have not taken the NYC exam yet, I start the prep course in October.
Does anyone know if the exam is exceptionally difficult?

Extremely difficult. You must take the prep course. I would guess that the cost of the class would be close to $3 k by now.

thats intersesting about not being able to use your book. I asked a tutor who i wont name, although recommended on this forum and he told me I could use my own books highlighted and tabbed and that the mandatory rental was just to get more money from the test takers. I hope I can use my own books and that the 60 bucks an hour I paid this tutor, didnt steer me wrong on other topics as well. Well I guess I will see this monday.

I just called prometric and also looked at the revision date 9-12-2006 and your nec book is not allowed to be brought into the class. That sucks that they revise the rules 3 weeks before the test. I called prometric and we can still bring our own books on the fire alarm and business law.

Will there ever be an attempt, challenge, or permission to use the electronic PDF version of the NEC while taking the test?

I use it exclusively everyday during seminars, and wondered if anyone has information showing some permitted use for test taking.

I do not believe they will allow a pdf version of the NEC to be used....what will be used to displaqy the pdf?
A computer/laptop?

The temptation to cheat would be too great for some.

Well, I took the test yesterday and if anyone wants to know you can use your own code book.
I did not have a highlighted version since the letter from experior said you had to rent one from them. You have to have permanent tabs though, they went around and checked and made guys remove ones that were not permanent.
I, on the other hand had to use a completely blank book, not that it was a big deal.

I still remember that place...the "buffet" and the bar afterwards ~ lots of ice clunking in glasses..not from drinking, from people's hands STILL shaking from the test!

I won't ask you how you think you did....don't want to jinx you ;)

I still have a ways to go until I can take my contractors test for electrical but check these pages out

http://www.contractors-license.org/nj/NewJersey.html#nj1
http://www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/nonmedical/electrical.htm

this one is a good one:
http://www.mikeholt.com/code_forum/showthread.php?t=80526

Amanda stated: "Electrician's license fees: It will cost you $100 to file an application for a license. The business and law exam will cost you $50, the trade exam is $90, and the alarm systems exam is $50. All fees are nonrefundable. You'll also have to pay $5 to rent the NEC book at the exam."

So im not sure if you can use your own book now...I have heard you can but maby they changed that rule.
