NM and Plastic Sprinkler Pipe

Has anyone ever been rejected for having Rolex in physical contact with plastic sprinkler piping? The sprinkler guy says he just failed for this, because "NM sheathing is petroleum based and will compromise the sprinkler pipe." I think the inspector is nuts - opinions?

Once , I lost my Rolex in a 4" sprinkler pipe, and I was really upset, so I went and bought another one, only it cost twice as much as the first one I lost.

The closest I've been to this is having a can light up against the orange plastic pipe they use. The installed said the plastic will melt. I told him to boil water in a paper cup over an open fire.

In your case, I would say the movement of the pipe and the can over time (caused by expantion and contraction, from heating and cooling) would rub a hole in the pipe. It may take 30 years but it can happen.

? Do not pressure test until recommended cure times are met.
? Do not use ratchet cutters below 50? F.
? Do not use CPVC pipe that has been stored outdoors, unprotected and
is faded in color.
? Do not allow threaded rod to come in contact with the pipe.
? Do not install Spears? FlameGuard? CPVC Fire Sprinkler Products in
cold weather without allowing for expansion.

I would like a little more toughness in my sprinkler pipe, what did they make it out if .... tissue paper ....... on no, NM does not degrade tissue paper.

They act as if NM cable is oozing petroleum products out of the jacket. :roll: I'm no chemist but I'm pretty sure the jacket on romex is PVC and the non-metallic sprinkler pipes are made of CPVC. They are close enough not to cause chemicals reactions. But what do I know?

We have gotten hit for this, we were told due to the static electricity could cause an accidental discharge.

This is known as "Willing suspension of physics". I find it difficult to believe that a static charge on a pipe full of (usually rather dirty, hence conductive) water could set off a standard sprinkler head.

Almost all sprinkler heads are thermal...about the only static that could cause one to open would be a lightning strike.

Ready for the punch line? The sprinkler guys fixed it by wrapping their pipe with duct tape wherever they crossed. :blink:
